Resources for Democracy
The summaries in this publication regarding town officials are adapted from the Vermont League of Cities and Towns’ “Handbook for Vermont Town Officers.” We thank VLCT for its help, and we accept responsibility for any errors of transcription or interpretation. If you are interested in more complete information on the duties and responsibilities of local officials, the book may be purchased for $25 from VLCT. More detailed manuals for specific town officers are also available from VLCT, phone 802-229-9111.
A number of important descriptions of government functions in the publication are adapted from the Vermont Institute for Government (VIG)’s valuable publication series. Many of the materials used here were written by Paul Gillies, the former Assistant Secretary of State for Vermont, who specializes in municipal law. We are grateful for the important work of VIG, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving educational opportunities for local officials and the public. For more information or complete copies of their pamphlets, contact VIG, 617 Comstock Rd., Suite 5, Berlin VT 05602-9194, phone 802-223-2389.
