Boy Scouts Boy Scout Troop 777 gathers boys from Middlesex, Montpelier, East Montpelier and Worcester for weekly meetings (Mondays, 7:00-8:30 p.m.) in a cabin built by Scouts in Putnamville. Troop activities include camping, ice fishing, Maine rafting trips, and attending Scout camp, and the troop is involved in community service such as Green Up Day. New Scouts are always welcome. Girl Scouts There are two Girl Scout troops which meet weekly at Rumney School. These are “blended” troops, including ages 5-17. Activities are chosen by the girls and include rock climbing, horseback riding, overnight museum trips, and naturally, camping. New Scouts are always welcome. (See Contacts)
Girls/Boyz First!! Community Based Mentoring Program Mentoring another person means taking the initiative in developing a relationship with someone, whereby you, as the mentor, provide leadership, guidance, friendship and a listening non-judgmental ear. Through the Community Based Mentoring Program, adult volunteers develop relationships with local youth, ages 10-14. Mentors receive training and on-going support and are carefully matched with youth. Daycare and Children’s Play Groups There are many options for daycare as well as for play groups in Middlesex and surrounding towns. The Family Center of Washington County maintains a comprehensive listing of day care facilities and of local play groups available for infants up to six year olds. Phone 802-828-8765. Home Schooling If you choose to educate your children at home instead of sending them to the local schools, the Vermont Department of Education can inform you of the state policies on home schooling, as well as direct you to resources and local contacts. Green Mountain Youth Symphony The Green Mountain Youth Symphony provides young musicians ages 6-18 with a stimulating, high-quality musical experience as well as instruction in orchestral technique, ensemble and musicianship. Located in Central Vermont, GMYS has a program for young musicians at every level of development and offers opportunities for beginning, intermediate and advanced players in three separate orchestras Repertory, Chamber, and Senior. Tuition is by level, with scholarships available. Tuition is by level, from $150 to $250 per semester. No child is turned away due to inability to pay. Washington Central Friends of Education Washington Central Friends of Education is a private non-profit organization working to strengthen communication and cooperation between the residents of the five district towns of Berlin, Calais, East Montpelier, Middlesex, and Worcester and the Washington Central schools.
