Martha Pellerin & Andy Shapiro Memorial Bandstand
Middlesex’s beautiful Bandstand was constructed during the summer of 2005 on town land situated near the Rumney Elementary School. It is dedicated to the memory of two well-known musician-residents of Middlesex: Martha Pellerin, French-Canadian musician, folklorist and educator; and Andy Shapiro, blues-jazz-gospel keyboardist, teacher and co-founder of the group The Disciples.
Over 110 individuals, local businesses, and the State of Vermont contributed enough money - together with the proceeds from two fundraising concerts - to purchase all the materials needed to build the Bandstand. Over 40 local volunteers helped with the construction. These efforts were supported by the Middlesex Selectboard, Recreation Committee, Historical Society, Town Clerk’s office, School Board, and road crew, and were organized by an active six-member Bandstand Committee.
Each summer the Bandstand presents top-flight local and regional musicians. The concert series has featured Tammy Fletcher, The Starline Rhythm Boys, The Black Sea Quartet and the Green Mountain Brass Band, to name a few. The summer series takes place on Thursday evenings in the months of July and August. Everyone is welcome to come, bring a picnic, and enjoy the free events. All of these fabulous performances are supported through the generosity of local business sponsors. Check the Middlesex Newspaper or this website for concert and event listings.
