Cemeteries
The Middlesex Village Cemetery, Middlesex’s oldest cemetery, is owned by the town, and is maintained by the Cemetery Commission (see below). Some of Middlesex’s early residents, including Revolutionary and Civil War veterans, are buried here. This cemetery is not available for new burials.
The North Branch Cemetery is located along a quiet section of Portal Road, in the southeast corner of the town. This cemetery is privately run by the North Branch Cemetery Association, and sells lots and conducts burials. (See Contacts)
The Middlesex Center Cemetery is located on the Center Road. Shaded by stately maple trees, it is the largest cemetery in Middlesex. It is privately run, and sells cemetery lots and conducts burials. The Middlesex Center Cemetery Association, Inc. oversees the cemetery. (See Contacts)
In addition, Middlesex is home to at least six small family cemeteries (one of which, the Carr Cemetery on the corner of East Hill Road and Bolduc Road, is owned by the town), as well as one possible Native American burial site. Old grave sites offer a fascinating view on our town’s history. Contact the Middlesex Historical Society for more information on these historic sites.
The Middlesex Cemetery Commission has three members elected at Town Meeting to staggered 2- and 3-year terms. This group is responsible for the care and management of the cemeteries owned by the town (the Middlesex Village Cemetery and the Carr Cemetery). Neither of these cemeteries sells lots any longer, so the Commission’s focus is on maintaining the cemeteries (headstones, lawns, etc.) and keeping fences in repair. (See Contacts)
