Below is a list of upcoming events in Middlesex. Below that is the regularly scheduled town and school committee meetings. And for a view of some typical events for the year scroll down further or use the links in the table on the right.

  • Do you want to run for town office? For most elected positions, the deadline for filing your nominating petition with the Town Clerk is the 6th Monday before the election on Town Meeting Day. Contact the Town Clerk, 802-223-5915 or email.
     
  • Are you interested in putting an item on the Town Meeting warning? The deadline to file your petitions with the Town Clerk is 40 days before Town Meeting. (See Your Voice in Middlesex) Contact the Town Clerk’s office at 802-223-5915 or email.
     
  • The Middlesex Historical Society generally meets on the third Mondays of January, May, and September at 7:00 PM at the Middlesex Town Hall (downstairs). The meetings are open to anyone wishing to learn more about Middlesex history. It you'd like to attend a meeting or find out more about the Society, please call Patty Wiley at 229-0499 to confirm the date and time.   • If you want to vote on Town Meeting Day, but aren’t registered to vote in Middlesex: the cut-off date for applying for addition to the voter checklist is noon on the second Saturday preceding Town Meeting Day. Contact the Town Clerk’s office at 802-223-5915 or email.
     
  • The Middlesex Annual Report is mailed to residents in time for Town Meeting. It features the report of the town officers; the agenda for the meeting, including the articles warned for voting; the school report; and reports from the organizations active in the town.   • Absentee ballots for the Australian ballot voting on Town Meeting Day are available 20 days before Town Meeting. Contact the Town Clerk’s office at 802-223-5915 or email.

  • A Rumney School Budget Informational Meeting is held at the school on the Monday night before Tuesday’s Town Meeting.
     
  • Town Meeting Day! On the first Tuesday in March, Middlesex holds its Town Meeting starting at 4:45 p.m. at the Middlesex Town Hall. Voting by Australian ballot to elect officers for the ensuing year takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Town Hall.
     
  • A Buffet Dinner is traditionally served on Town Meeting Day at the Middlesex United Methodist Church (across from the Town Hall), beginning at 5:30 p.m. and continuing until everyone has been served following the meeting. Proceeds benefit church projects.

  • All dogs must be licensed by April 1. Contact the Town Clerk’s office at 802-223-5915 or email.
     
  • Trout season runs from the second Saturday in April through last Sunday in October.

  • Green-Up Day is on the first Saturday in May. Join with the thousands of volunteers across the state in this unique Vermont tradition, cleaning up litter from roadsides and public places and sprucing up the community. If you need collection bags, information on drop-off points, or ideas on which Middlesex roads need work. (See Contacts)
     
  • The Fire Auxiliary Rummage Sale is generally held at the end of May at the Middlesex Town Hall. Donations are accepted starting in mid-May. (See Contacts)

Church Tent Sale

The Middlesex United Methodist Church is famous for its fabulous tent sale; keep an ear out for other Middlesex-wide events they’re planning.

  • The Shady Rill Fishing Derby is held in June on the state free fishing day in early June. A section of Martin’s Brook is stocked with trout. Children up to 12 years of age are welcome to participate, and prizes are awarded. Refreshments and a cook-out lunch. Suggested donation: $15.00 per family. (See Contacts)
     
  • In mid-June (the weekend after the Fishing Derby), check out the annual Rumney School Fair & Community Plant Sale held at the Rumney School. Come see your neighbors’ perennials, and enjoy the book sale, games for children’s, pony rides, refreshments, and more. Contact Rumney Community School Partnership. (see Contacts)
     
  • Keep your ears open for what the Middlesex United Methodist Church is planning for its community event in May or June. In past years, it has been a fabulous tent sale; future events may include another sale, or a Middlesex-wide homecoming day with dancing, games, and more.   • Middlesex property tax bills are mailed out in early July. Pay your property tax bills early to save money! A discount of the bill may be taken if your taxes are paid in full within 30 days of issuance of the bills.

  • Enjoy the wonderful Vermont summer! Take a walk on a cool mountain trail or a shady back road. Enjoy fresh local produce from the Montpelier Farmer’s Market in downtown Montpelier (Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., May - October) or Waterbury Farmer’s Market (at Rusty Parker Memorial Park, Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., May through October). Or go swimming or boating at the Wrightsville Reservoir.

  • On or before the first Tuesday in September, members of the major political parties may caucus and nominate candidates for Justice of the Peace. For more information, contact the Town Clerk, 802-223-5915 or email.
     
  • Enjoy corn on the cob with neighbors and support a good cause at the annual Recreation Committee Corn Roast in late September. (See Contacts)

  • Early voting is available to all. Absentee ballots for the November general elections are available 30 days before the election. You can vote at the Town Clerk’s office or take a ballot home to vote. Call the Town Clerk, 802-223-5915 or email.

  • Bow hunting season runs for 23 days starting on the first Saturday in October; and for another nine days starting the first Saturday after the completion of rifle season. (Muzzleloader season: same as the second bow-hunting season.)
     
  • The annual Fire Auxiliary Haunted House fundraising event is held just before Halloween at the Town Hall. Always a favorite with Middlesex kids, the Haunted House is staged for all age groups. (The spookiest parts can be toned down for younger children.) (See Contacts)

  • Attend the Selectboard and School Board meetings starting in late fall if you’d like to follow and participate in the school and town budget process.
     
  • Voting for state, federal, and some local officials takes place on Election Day, the first Tuesday in November. Voting booths are set up at the Middlesex Town Hall and are open from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (Polls open at 7:00 a.m. for the General Election during Presidential Election years.)
     
  • Deer season (rifle) runs from 12 days before Thanksgiving until the Sunday following Thanksgiving.
     
  • Middlesex Property Taxes Due on November 20 of each year (as voted on at Town Meeting). Payments should be mailed to the Town of Middlesex, 5 Church St., Middlesex, VT 05602. Call the Town Clerk at 802-223-5915 or email if you have questions.

  • The Fire Auxiliary Christmas Tree Sale is held on Saturdays and Sundays at the Middlesex Town Hall, starting after Thanksgiving and going until Christmas (unless all trees are sold sooner). Get a fine tree and support a fine cause. (See Contacts)
